Point Reyes National Park
A Natural Sanctuary, A Human Haven
From its thunderous ocean breakers crashing against rocky headlands and expansive sand beaches to its open grasslands, brushy hillsides, and forested ridges, Point Reyes offers visitors over 1500 species of plants and animals to discover.
My generous host took me to our third trip to our favorite place here––Point Reyes National Seashore. We drove there, about an hour. I woke so groggy! But we were in the car by 7:30 a.m. and after grabbing coffee down the street in Sausalito, a quick walk of the dogs, we drove there in the fog. The sun came out later in the day. We walked eight miles at various beach hikes. And her dogs came with us which was lovely, but her coon hound, Brewster, the wild man, got lost while we were on one of the beaches, so we spent a good adventure hunting him down. We saw a bird that I think was a northern harrier. We saw a brown bunny, we saw elk, we saw a snowy egret, a great blue heron, a coyote, very close up with a huge bushy tail. We talked we talked we talked we talked. Went to the bookstore. Had lunch. Hiked some more. Oh, the scenery, the green, the wildflowers the raucous wild surf! Then we had a delightful time in the evening with her daughter, just home from college, watching the latest episode of White Lotus. What an amazing day. Sent off my poem revision for workshop tomorrow. Yay.
