Torrey Pines Nature Preserve Trail to Beach

Torrey Pines Nature Preserve Trail to Beach

A nice sleep, and awake early for a hike. Frank drops me at the trail and goes off for coffee this morning. I am pleased to head off on my own. I hike up the road in the Torrey Pines Preserve to the top of the hill and take the winding trail that leads down to the beach with spectacular views. The smell of sage engulfs me as I walk the dirt trail, passing boisterous groups of cheerful hikers. I am in my happy happy zone, smelling the flora and fauna, surrounded by beauty. I make it down to the beach and walk the firm moist sand along the cliffs. The tide is rolling and rolling in, the surfers are evey where catching the mild waves in the vast shoreline of the Pacific. Frank and I meet for our kayak tour in La Jolla; we see seals and one dolphin, and then back to the. beach for the afternoon. We choose Black’s Beach again, the tough access draws us. But here are huge crowds! We take the dusty stairs, hundreds of them, down the cliffs. We dip and nap and bake. The ascent is a tough one on my legs today. Dinner at a lovely restaurant with a view, our anniversary dinner, as I leave tomorrow while he stays on business. We say the special things we feel in our hearts for each other: that the best year of our 34 years together so far is: now. And yet, every one of them has been good of course.
