#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

“You may go into the fields or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s garden. Your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. Mcgregor.”

~ Beatrix Potter

Early, in the fresh morning, Wave puts on his rubber boots to keep his feet dry in the wet grass and we go to see how the garden is. Not good. The rabbit(s). My lettuces, my cucumbers, my beans, my peas––decimated. Agh! All our fine hard work ruined! I just know it’s rabbits! Wave goes off to school and I go for a short walk, a short swim, and then, determined to deal with the problem, I call Frank and he agrees we will have to put chicken wire around the boxes. He will get the wire, and I cannot rest until I have returned to the lovely garden shop where I purchased the seedlings and replace them. My daughter comes with me. I am able to replace all but the peas, because they are out. Plus, I get a few more herbs. More rosemary and some fragrant chamomile and lots of parsley for my daughter. I feel better already. In the afternoon I leave my desk and Frank and I go off for the chicken wire––and new peas. It’s hot in the garden, but a light breeze blows through. He puts up wire, I replant plants. We don’t get through the whole job, but get far as we can by the time we need to go to play pickle with my daughter and her boyfriend. First, we water it all, and hide all the seedlings not yet planted in the house from the bunnies. Tomorrow morning, I hope I will find that the peas and the cukes that got into the protected boxes have survived. After a dinner out, I go into the dark yard for a lovely warm summer evening shower. If the bunnies are burrowing nearby, and I suspect they are, I am not wishing them well tonight.
