#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Rainy River

This morning the alarm hurt. And then I heard Brittany, needing to go out. It was a hard sleep, and a good one. Rain, for March, more rain for March. The river is filling and spilling over. I let my daughter sleep in. Wave told me he had a nightmare. A coyote came into the house, into his room. So I suggested that tonight, before sleeping, he could imagine Charlie coming into his dream. And he said, I want to do it right now. So, we imagined a new dream, sitting at the top of the stairs, in which Charlie enters and Wave is emboldened and he yells at the coyotes to leave his territory, this is his family and he belongs to this family down to his bones. And then he said I have a bucket and my bucket is full of meat. And he threw meat to the coyotes and told them to take it outside. And the coyotes took the meat and ran away. So, we had a very nice breakfast of scrambled egg croissant and I drove him to school and he didn’t ask once about the tv and I told stories of the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard and going to Chappaquiddick and then we were there. And I had my swim after, and walked with Charlie in the rain to the river. And my aunt called while I was walking and asked me if I would like to keep Brittany, and I said yes! Thank you! And my uncle got on the phone and he was very worried about where his car is, and so I took him through the conversation my brother has established to reassure him, about being in his new home, and the car is safe in the garage and we are taking care of it and he has nothing to worry about and he said, well, that’s good, and chuckled and handed the phone back to my aunt. I was happy to have my poem in print today at ONE ART. I’ve put the link below if you’d like to read it.
