#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Farm Pond Afternoon

The sun comes into the kitchen in a stream over the place where the boy eats his breakfast. He is perched on a high stool. His mother hurries him to get dressed for school and he is quite upset. He had just found his shadow. She’s sorry for interrupting his shadow, and he gets dressed. But I find that we have ten minutes while she gets dressed, to play and laugh with this marvelous shadow. And for ten minutes we use hands, feet, arms, legs to make shadows dance in the kitchen. It’s time to leave, then, and I promise him, that sun will be back another morning through the door of the kitchen. We will meet this shadow again. I have a client, do some work, and then have my swim at Farm Pond, mid-day under the hot sun and the water is glistening today, warm and delicious. I don’t want to stop my wonderful swim around the island, but I must. I am glad to drive my friend to the airport to say goodbye to her after her weeks long visit nearby. The trip to Logan is pretty quick and easy, and then I end up at Farm Pond again to meet my grandson. Water still so warm. We have many races, build and stomp sandcastles, and see, again, his new beach friends. Frank surprises us for a visit; and then my brother surprises us, arriving for his swim. Leaving is not fun. But teeth are chattering, stomachs are growling, and the pizza will not get made in my absence. It’s a turbulent ride home. But the pizza is delicious once it gets to the table. These September days on Farm Pond are drawing summer out. Cooler days coming.
