#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Charles River Morning

Cloudy, cool, fresh. Early, I am coaxed out. A sweatshirt on, no shoes. Wet grass, cold to the touch. I am bleary eyed, slowly waking up. Cheerful, the land feels nourished by rain. Frank notices the grass is coming green again. it’s true. And there is water in the brook. A fairly large puddle of it. It’s coming back. I take a long walk after breakfast with Charlie; he is so fit! And then I drive to Wellesley, where I have invited my Charles River Writers to join me for coffee/tea for our annual end of summer, beginning fall get together. No writing, just conversation, catching up from our two months apart. And, to my delight, two members from Farm Pond Writers, our previous incarnation, come as well. It’s a talkative, cheerful visit and connection. Then I drive to Farm Pond. I want a long swim as I prep for the perimeter swim on Saturday. It’s cloudy, 69 degrees. Cooler than I’d like, but I just dive in and swim toward the island. Yes, it’s cool. A bit of a hard start, but I just keep going. After I pass the island I get to close to the shore and bonk my head on my friend’s dock. Oh well. Then, I swim into a submerged tree that’s under the surface of the edge. Oh well. The sun comes out from behind the clouds for a few luscious moments. I have warmed up. And I have energy. And end up swimming a mile. Good prep. I feel good. I realize it’s going to be cooler in the pond from now on in this season. So be it. Both girls have agreed to swim the perimeter and my brother and his son will as well. There is so much progress in the construction. The new gas fireplace is in, and Ed, our wonderful contractor says that our bedroom floor will go in soon. It’s really going to be finished!
