#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Early morning, Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard

"And joy is everywhere; it is in the earth's green covering of grass; in the blue serenity of the sky."

Rabindranath Tagore

Who wakes first, Charlie, or the Special One? Doesn’t matter. It’s around 5:00 a.m. and time for the household to be awake. Charlie and Suzi must be walked, as we are not at home. And I desperately need coffee. Soon, we’re all packed into the car to drive the mile into Oak Bluffs with all the early risers, mostly fishermen. Mocha Motts coffee! What deliciousness! Oh, I am so happy now, as Frank and I and Charlie and the Special One sit and breakfast on muffins and coffee overlooking the water under such a fabulous blue, blue morning. Such calm. Such pleasure, such peace. I decide to walk back with the stroller, up Ocean Ave, in the blue atmosphere of sky and ocean and green grass and wildflowers and no traffic. It’s worth waking early for all this gorgeousness. I am on the beach with the Special One by 8:30––is there anywhere better to be? Frank goes off to play tennis with his local friend. It’s warm, pleasantly cloudy, and we are almost alone. Families arrive in little groups throughout the morning of play. Frank arrives by noon with sandwiches. People are so friendly and everyone is having fun. Everyone seems to be smiling here on this island this 4th of July weekend. In the afternoon, happily tired, we get cleaned up and packed up and make a ferry earlier than planned. I am unpacked and settled back in at home; Suzi and Charlie can roam as they please, and we have dinner on the deck with my daughter and her boyfriend. Every muscle aches from the fun of our brief journey. And yet I feel the blueness of this day is an aura around me of gratitude and calm delight.
