No, I did not let Charlie down this morning. Frank bought a polar jacket and gloves for a trip he’s making to Breckenridge, CO this week on business/pleasure. He has not skied on snow in years. Hmmmm. I borrowed the jacket and gloves and was quite comfy in the 5 degree morning under a bright blue sky. And so thrilled to be at the river and all around the wetlands to see what pictures would find me in the ice. A mesmerizing morning, sliding around. My daughter said it was too cold for the Special One to be out with me, and I agreed. But Suzi came too, with her youthful spirit. There were so many images that grabbed me. My favorite is the woman with her belly full of eggs. All her eggs in a basket. Fertility Goddess. She is a picture of a line in a poem I recently wrote. I’m excited to explore this image more through writing. The ice was quite layered and deep in parts of the wetlands. So many different universes of ice I crossed. I could even see the green grasses swishing slowly beneath the glass of ice in the wetlands beneath my feet. I didn’t want to come in. I went for a long hike when I was done with my pictures and the dogs happily trotted along. And then my mood changed. My hunger for pictures was satiated; I stopped looking. I listened to the New York Times Book Review podcast and other shows and was very happy. We had visitors and I never found time at my desk, the day flew by and I had thought I would start a new poem for tomorrow and attend to some e-mails and get my Aim for Astonishing blog sent. . . but what I had instead, close conversations with loved ones, was worth it. And time with my daughter, who, for the past two days has sat quite close to me on the couch, leaning her head on my shoulder. Not usually the affectionate one. So, when she is, I notice. I notice and respond.
