. . . Summer lingers, but it’s about ending. It’s about how things

redden and ripen and burst and come down. . .

~ Excerpt from, “Late Summer,” by Jennifer Grotz

Windows and doors open to coolness, surprise. I am waking early these days, retiring earlier. The sunlight shifting. I walk with both dogs, turn back early as Suzi is tired. I’m glad she is with us. They both dip in the brook. I am so pleased and encouraged with yesterday’s weeding I dig right into my pulling after a walk. I tackle two more gardens, filing two wagons of weeds. And, I make a decision: I will buy some plants. I go to home depot and get some mums for the planter and quite a bit of cone flower for the perennial garden in the vegetable garden, some phlox for beside the art barn, and a rose bush, half-off. I plant none of this yet; pull a few more weeds. I have work to do: my newsletter. I attend to my fall planning and update my website and have my newsletter almost ready to send. Frank orders me a treat: new running shoes—trail shoes for the woods. This cooler weather makes me want to run. The weather is so pleasant and calm it’s hard to imagine the catastrophic weather in Louisiana tonight, happening to so many. Such suffering and devastation.
