The “Before” picture, Chilmark Road Race
When we arrived yesterday, in the heat, I felt doubtful about having the energy to rise early this morning and get out from Lambert’s Cove to Chilmark for the annual road race. But, I got a good night sleep and my daughter Franci was up, cheerful, ready to go. We made it out there early and were the first to register and get our numbers. It was broiling hot already at 8:00 a.m. But, how fun to be in Chilmark with my youngest. We decided to walk the three miles up Middle Road, past the meadows and ponds and stone walls and gardens and trees, to the start of the race, instead of taking the shuttle. We broiled, of course, in the humidity. Then, waited an hour for the “race” to start. A lovely chance to have those relaxing, deep, rambling conversations of waiting that only happen with that kind of down time, unfocused. I knew it was going to be a tough one, starting without water in that heat. The crowds gathered: kids and adults of ALL ages, it’s such a lovely family event. I told my daughter, run your own race, and I would take my own time. Good heavens, the heat! And no water for the first mile and a half. I took my time, had to walk a bit, as did many others, of course. In the end, after the finish line, found my daughter who was happy with her time, and that’s what mattered to me. Being there with her, and her wanting so much to do it, and to do it with me. We haven’t done it together since 2012. A relaxing afternoon at the beach, icy water, and another long walk, some swimming. Dinner tonight at my brother and sister-in-law. This island is family and and years of memories. I know I will sleep very soundly tonight.
