Laverna Trail, Maine

Laverna Trail, Maine

Dog walk, up the dirt road, the woodsy road, the first walk, the warm day, the birdsong. I have not slept well in the waves and the turbulence. Second walk, after breakfast, after a sweet ride to the bookstore bakery in Damariscotta with my husband before his afternoon appointments. What a good listener he is. I have a download of emotions. Then, second walk, a hike with my daughter and her boyfriend, a super pleasant and lovely one, a fabulous hike. We walk up the road to a trail, Laverna Preserve, and head down hill in the woods. I just trust it will take us to spectacle, I find the yellow glacier lily, new to me, a bright and cheerful diversion on the trailside. Yes, spectacle: that’s exactly where we land! The craggy granite rocks and cliffs and waves pounding against them - reminding me so much of Acadia National Park. The wild beautiful awesome spectacle of this Atlantic coast. We are so glad we’ve come. This hike, the highlight of my day. Frank is working the young ones head to Damariscotta. I go to Pemaquid State Park and fall onto a towell in the sun with my hat over my head for three solid hours. Tonight, we are sitting looking out the window together looking at the cove when my daughter cries out––red moon! It’s rising low, low over the cove, and it’s a deep pink. Then it starts raining. Still, the cloudless moon bursting ball of glow. It reaches me, in the lungs, and I can breathe into this moon. I can let this moon into my chest. I make space to hold there, its glow and its shine. On the beach I am wearing my green overalls. I am green in them, or trying to be. Trying to be green as the basal leaves of the glacier lily. Trying to feel deeply wholesome in green; pure and innocent as a plant.
