Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard

Up early for the holiday. First one up and there is a lovely, peaceful silence. I light a candle and sit in meditation as the sky lightens with pink and blue stripes. Soon, the bustle of getting the household out the door, into the car, including both dogs. Every seat taken and a topper on top for pies and changes of clothes. We are running late for our 9:30 ferry. Will we make it? It’s tight; but we have a few minutes to spare. Then, we cross to Martha’s Vineyard from Woods Hole to spend the Thanksgiving holiday in our traditional way at my brother’s house. First, I find that my other brother is on our ferry. We all meet and drive to my favorite hike in the world at Great Rock Bight Preserve in Chilmark. We have sunshine and cool, not cold, air! My nephews have joined us, and we hike the trail down to Vineyard Sound. Charlie and Suzi are in heaven––it’s their favorite place too. Missing is my son, who is away in Vermont working, and I miss him. My youngest sets the ritual for the walk and we all circle up at the end and show the special things we have found or seen. Then, back to my brother’s house for a wonderful meal cooked by my sister-in-law in their cozy and warm house. Too much dessert. Who cares? In the car, packed back in for the drive home, I ask, okay everyone, how would you rate this day, this Thanksgiving? “A” from all.
