#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream
Charles River
This morning I woke up in the middle of the night wide awake and chose a poem I wrote a year ago to revise. I've workshopped it, a lot, most recently, at my Truchas poetry retreat. Then I went back to sleep, woke up, went for my walk, revised some more. The feedback I received at Truchas was maybe it needed more. . . something. Which usually means, I've learned to believe, is that it has everything it needs already, and what it really needs is less. So, that's what I did. I took out what made it seem like it needed more, and now, I think, it's just right sized.

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and You—beside—
The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As Sponges—Buckets—do—
The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound— ”
