#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Painted turtle laying eggs

Just over the trestle bridge, on this post-rain morning, a painted turtle laying her eggs. Charlie behind me. Good Charlie, plugging along. So many lovely wildflowers, and the wet, wet earth. I’m happy for all the plants. And I take a swim. The house is quiet. Unbelievably, I am the only one home, except Brittany and Charlie. I get a little work done. Frank goes with me, again, in the afternoon, to the garden store. They are having a sale and so many native perennials to take home that will need to find a home in the ground. A hot, humid day. Before a quiet dinner, with fresh snap peas from the garden, I finish weeding the beds. Pick lettuce for a salad for my son. The garden is giving. Tomorrow, the summer squash will come to the table. The bunnies have decimated the green beans. All of them. Not a bean to be found in the garden. But, gathering the lettuce, I see a strange bug in my butterfly weed, the bright purple blooms, and I go closer, what is it? It’s a hummingbird! I think it was a ruby throated hummingbird. So welcome in my garden. Dinner with my son, a good catch up with the three of us. A lovely quiet day, and time to find places for my cardinal flower and black eyed susans and turtlehead and rose yarrow and more.
