#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream
Perfecting the macaron
Sunflowers in the morning, puddles in the afternoon. Macarons after dinner. I felt a grumbling today. Overtired? Took my walk with Charlie, and the sunflowers are still mighty cheerful as they pass their peak. We will dry the seeds soon. I have promised my grandson we will do this together. Low energy today, but still such richness with listening to people’s writing. That always gives me energy. Frosting today. My daughter worked for the second day on her best batch of macarons so far. Tonight, I taste one. Delicious. Her boyfriend says, “As good as Ladurée!” and I agree with him. She has struggled so, for these tiny treats to come out right. Stamina. Stamina for pastry chefs and stamina for poets. That’s what it takes. It’s my day to pick up my grandson from school, and I knew this would happen: I drive the 25 minutes to pick him up and I’ve forgotten the car seat! It didn’t get put back in my car. My daughter forgot, and, well, I forgot. And there I am, opening my car door to receive him, and that’s when I remember. So, we take a walk while we wait for the car seat to be driven to us. Well, there is an absolutely massive, stunning puddle in the industrial park, and it’s suddenly bright and sunlit, and jubilant white clouds are reflected in this beauty, and of course, he must go in. He must go all in, body and soul. He’s soaked from head to toe by the time the car seat arrives, and who cares? He’s puddle crazed. Late afternoon, he wants to be in the yard, and I have to get dinner, but somehow it all gets done. My Ukrainian friend has given me a lovely hibiscus plant. Earlier in the day, my youngest took a video of the ground hog on the deck eating my plant where I’d left it to get rain! For heaven’s sake! So, I potted it, which was my plan, to keep inside, to keep it in bloom, I hope, all winter. Yes, and dinner done. The macarons. Then, my Tuesday night writers began again for the fall, and the writing and sharing was so rich and nourishing. I’m glad we’re back together, and welcoming some new ones.
