#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Anti-Fascist Struggle Day (Croatian: Dan antifašističke borbe) is a public holiday in Croatia. It is observed on 22 June and commemorates the formation of the First Sisak Partisan Detachment, a Communist-led guerrilla unit during World War II in Yugoslavia on 22 June 1941, and in general the uprising of the anti-fascist Croatian wing of the Yugoslav Partisans against the forces of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and their puppet state―Independent State of Croatia.

It’s 11:00 p.m. in Split, Croatia, and it’s so cozy in our hotel room in this comfy bed. Stayed up all day, mostly, since landing in Zurich at 6:00 a.m. We arrived here in Split around 1:30 p.m., met friends from our group at the airport, had a very long lunch in the late afternoon here at the hotel, outdoors on the patio as more and more people from our group arrived from various destinations around the world. Then, four of us took an Uber at 5:30—it was still hot and sunny — to a nearby beach. It was very crowded with happy families. Today was a national holiday for Croatia, Anti-Fascist Struggle Day. The Uber dropped us at the top of a hill and we walked down to the beach with the evergreens behind us and the rocky shore in front of us. I had a lovely swim with my friend from Sherborn, Po, and the water was warm and flat and extremely salty. Dinner, again, here at the hotel, family style as more guests in our party arrive. Lovely dinner conversations getting to know new people. In the morning, I look forward to a long walk around Split, getting my bearings. We are on land tomorrow; I hope for another swim at the beach we went to. And sightseeing before we board our boat on Saturday morning. Split is a stunning small city on the Adriatic sea with incredible views of mountains and trees, flowering bushes and wildflowers of all kinds. I’m so grateful to be here, exploring this fascinating country and coastline with friends.
