Cormorant Morning

I thought it was the heron for a moment, when I approached the river this morning, and saw a figure in the mist between the trees at the water’s edge. Turns out it was a cormorant. A lovely early morning sighting. And then the mallard on the brook where he lives. I asked the Special One today, “Who loves you?” and he said, Mack, Nack, Pack and Quack––from “Make Way for the Ducklings.” He has grown quite attached to this one that we call Mr. Mallard. Today was a whir and craze and roar of activity. The tree people finishing up the job. So much work! Dead trees downed and cleaned up. A wonderful feeling. And I worked in the yard and in the house with my helper. A gathering certainly helps get clutter cleared. I potted plants and when Frank got free he zoomed into action with clearing up the things he was managing. We worked all day. And then my dear friend did a lovely thing: invited us for a quiet supper. Just the perfect close of this day of whirring activity and preparation. One dear friend arrived in town; the other missed her plane. I am ready for a deep and satisfied sleep.
