#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Samara, Costa Rica

Lunch at the beach

How is it possible I have never been snorkelling––until today? We did not walk. We woke early and met Victor, our local guide and friend, for our day trip to Samara, about an hour away. We had arranged for a sea kayak to some reefs and an island for snorkelling. It was sunny and hot, of course. And we had some wonderful views of fish and sea life—so intimate and engaging to be eye to eye with fabulous fish! We had lots of swimming and kayaking was not at all rough–and we saw a sea turtle! It was a splendidly fun morning, and then on to lunch, also in the heat and sun. Frank and I and my friend, Liz, went back to Nosara and the others went on for an adventure with Macaws. The rest of the afternoon the three of us spent working and resting and swimming in the quiet casa. Before leaving this morning, I woke at 5, as usual, and finished tweaking my poem to be sent off for my poetry workshop tonight. Last week, my meeting with my poetry mentor, Vanessa, was so worthwhile. We spent some time on the poem I sent off for tonight. I had told her I felt stuck; and she said, “Great. That means you can go anywhere.” And I wrote her comment into my notes of this poem I had taken apart and couldn’t seem to put back together. So, yesterday, when I opened the poem and saw that note, I got it. And the revision came. It was wise, helpful advice that allowed me to keep going. Tonight I went to poetry and the new version was very well received. My son called, on his way home to Massachusetts from Vermont and I didn’t get to talk but Frank did. Highlight of the day: the sea turtle sighting while we were kayaking. Even though I didn’t get an up-close encounter, to spot the turtle from a distance swimming with lifted head through the sea was just stunning. In the late afternoon, almost to sunset, I began a walk down the dirt road to have a swim and see the sunset on the beach but I read an e-mail and thought I needed to attend to something. Returned home unnecessarily, but got to have some quiet time with Frank by the pool to just talk and connect. Found the lovely blossom on the hot gravel road.

Blossom of late afternoon
