A late afternoon rainbow for Wave

Morning Brook

A boy turns three today. He is up early for school where there will be a celebration, of course, They are out the door on time and I have my swim. A great swim, and then a Charlie walk. I work on a poem revision and prep for my Monologue Showcase on Wednesday night. The day gets busier and busier. He is home in the afternoon, for some surprises in the yard. And I must make a birthday dinner, his special request, my mother’s chicken in wine and cream! Meanwhile, his Aunt Franci is baking his birthday cake, her homemade applesauce cake (with fresh homemade applesauce! using my mother’s recipe too). We discover a late afternoon rainbow shining above the trees. Dinner is perfection. He eats ravenously his special meal. And after, the cake. For the boy who loves excavators and trucks of all kinds, Franci has filled them with chocolate. He eats his whole slice without a fork, with the shovel of his excavator. I cheerfully do all the dishes and leave my kitchen spotless. By the time I’m upstairs I turn on the news, pretty tired, sprawled on my bed. But he is back, after his bath. He wants to do yoga with Grammy. And he knows I won’t say no, and I don’t. Three years ago I got to be in the hospital spending the night with him and his mother on his first day on earth.
