Landing in Albuquerque
Awake early, there is no walk for Charlie, there is a flight, a day of travel, an arrival in a favorite land. It was thirty seven years ago that Frank and I made the drive together for the first time (as friends!) from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. It was April, and it was snowy then, too, as it was today, in the late afternoon, driving into sunset. Ghostly white mountains; a delicious dinner in Santa Fe before driving on another hour in the dark, on increasingly slippery roads, to Ghost Ranch. A few days of restorative time here before driving to Scottsdale on business. Here, in this soul place, we will wake together, still, after all these years. In this land of enchantment where we realized we wanted to be more than friends. And how thrilling and frightening that was.
