#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Evergreen Brook

The pull of this story, interestingly, has not only not waned over the years, but actually grown. The story involves three friends who've gone to visit a fourth friend named Selena who's dying. There are women who became Friends because they were mothers together. And it is only now that I myself have made friends that because we raised our children together, that I understand the depth of that bond and just how devastating it'll be when one day we friends will have to say goodbye.

~ Gish Jen, New Yorker Fiction Podcast

Another morning, early out. Birdsong, blue sky, warmer. Pack on my back in search of the ducks. The evergreen tree owns the brook this morning, all ripple. No ducks, but geese honking in the sky. i listen, for the second day, to the New Yorker fiction podcast, trying to get through the reading of a Grace Paley story read by Gish Jen. The story is “Friends.” And I’m quite intrigued by it because it’s about women who raised their children together at the later end of their lives. Returned home before I was done. A group to run, this morning and tonight. Late afternoon Frank and I drove out on an errand, time to talk, and time for me to be surprised by talking to him about his dreams and goals for his tennis game. Dreams and goals I definitely support. It was a beautiful time to relax into a deep conversation.
