Charles River After Storm
“Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me.”
― Fred Rogers
Up at 4:30 as the storm is noisy and threatening. I’m sure trees are going down. It isn’t until daylight that the damage is clear. My daughter tries to leave for work and a massive tree is down next to the house, blocking the drive. Frank gets his tractor and chain saw in the pouring rain and wind, and soon enough the drive is cleared to pass. But we have a long driveway. And there was a second tree down as well. All in a day’s work for Frank. This storm knocked our power out for a few hours as well. I did not want to walk Charlie in the woods, of course. During a calm in the storm I walked to the river, but that’s all. I hope to feel better entirely and get back in the pool. For today, my exercise came through food shopping and errand running; and my spiritual nourishment came through a phone call with a dear friend. We have listened to each other through twenty-five Christmases, from stressful to joyful, and I hope we will listen to each other’s hearts at Christmas for many more.
