Effervescence at the Afternoon Brook
I go out in the wintry afternoon for refreshment. I have been at my desk. I have been with my Ukrainian friends, in group. I have prepared my workshop for tonight and tomorrow. I have had my morning swim. Charlie is more than ready and very happy to see that my sneakers are pointing outdoors. Together, we go. Across the crusty driveway to the river. Bright sky and a film of ice. I have all the time I need to appreciate this ice in the river and the wetlands. I stop at the brook. This is mindfulness in action, this seeing, this appreciating, this being with the shapes the ice makes. Earlier today a friend sent me a poem by Jan Richardson:
To all that is chaotic
in you,
let there come silence.Let there be
a calming
of the clamoring,
a stilling
of the voices that
have laid their claim
on you. . .~ Excerpt from “Blessing in the Chaos,” by Jan Richardson
