Newport Cliff Walk, Rhode Island

Newport Cliff Walk, Rhode Island

The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.

~ Carl Jung

A July Saturday, a day to relax and play and be with family and find sunshine in Newport, Rhode Island. I woke late, having stayed up too late watching the HBO Series Mare of Eastham. But, this is summer fun too. We make a day trip to Newport; I don’t even step into the garden today, but I do water the hydrangeas before we leave. (It rained, plenty, of course it did!) And some of us went to the tennis tournament. And I took a special someone in the pack and walked the cliffwalk and the beach and the side streets in the hot hot sun, and sat under a massive shade tree on the grounds of Salve Regina college with my special one and let him crawl in the grass. Oh, it was a broiler of a day. We went to the tennis for a bit; then some of us took a ride down Ocean Blvd and stopped at our usual place, the side of the road to take a dip in the ocean at the beautiful rocks. A fog had rolled in, but the day stayed hot and dry. When I stopped to take a close look at the lovely milkweed in bloom over the cliff where it grew wild on the Atlantic, of course, a friendly monarch flew up to greet us! What a gorgeous day, what a July relaxing day away from home in the fine sunshine and plenty of walking and seeing favorite things. No pressure. No demands. The charm of a historic seaside town and a view to the sailboats in the haze.
