#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Found: Morning Nest

Found: Morning Nest

. . . For secresy and shelter rightly made
And beautiful it is to walk beside
The lanes and hedges where their homes abide.

~ Excerpt from “Birds’ Nests,” by John Clare (1793-1864)

I went through the pine grove to the river and found this nest blown down from a tree. All the needles dripping from long hours of rain but it wasn’t raining when I set out. I walked for a good walk; more people were out. By the time I returned home, and crossing our field, the rain began in a steady drizzle. There would be no feeling really warm or dry today. I helped my youngest pack up all her things to return home from our vacation week. And wrote a poem from the letters––the second to last! Then, started the last and was interrupted. Tomorrow, I finish this first draft for certain. I’m so excited! Tonight was pure pleasure: a birthday party for friends, vaccinated friends, indoors. Indoors. Indoors! Oh, the warmth of it, the delight and relief. Felt I could stay talking all night, but we left a bit early, another milestone to meet: Frank leaves on a business trip tomorrow, before dawn. His first trip in 15 months. We’ve not been apart more than a few hours. He’s excited. And I’m excited for him. I’m excited for moving forward from the pandemic into what this new age will be. To discover what is old to be reclaimed and what is new to be experienced.
