Child

one with the sun

in trackless fields

of yellow grass and thistle, scent

of humid heavy air and the wing music

of bees and flies. . .

~ Excerpt from “One With The Sun,” A. F. Moritz

So much heat. The day begins in a broil. Florida summer is how it begins. And remains. But I want to try a run in the woods. Suzi, happy Suzi, despite her age and aches, she insists, she’ll come. I take her, because she insists. And I circle back to drop her home before going on. She has had enough. And Charlie too! I go along without the dogs. It’s a broil. I find a feather on the trail and stop, and a beautiful leafe with yellow veins lit by the sun and the shadow of blades of grass. And a dancer, a tiny dancer, in an old log as I pass. I love the little dancer, waving her arms as a pass. I pass into the wide open Queenly meadow, the whole of it grown in lace, thriving under the blue sky and hot sun. It’s a softness that cools my feet a bit as I run through. Ah, and I remember a sweet moment, as Charlie and I were starting off through our trail through the woods, and Suzi was well behind, we weren’t sure she was following, until suddenly, there she was beside us, running along, and Charlie turned his head and gave her a kiss. He wanted her with us too. I worked on my monthly newsletter, wrote my essay, and sent it off. My daugher and I went, at the end of the day, to drop food for the pigs at Unity Farm, and then for a dip in the pond. More than a dip. I swam around the island once, and she swam around the island twice! The sun was still so hot, I didn’t cool much, but it was a refreshment I felt grateful for. And the chance to talk to my daughter about the solvable things of life.
