#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Morning, Lamp in Creek

Morning, Lamp in Creek

. . . Quick, quick, ask heaven of it, of every mortal relation,

feeling that is fleeing,

for what would the heart be without a heaven to set it on?

I can’t help thinking no word will ever be as full of life as this world,

I can’t help thinking of thanks.

Excerpt from “Slant,” by Suji Kwok Kim

To the sound of my alarm, groggy and confused, I wake. Where am I? In college, a dorm room, a suite, my own room in a hall of four, my faculty friends, sleeping on the other side of my walls. It’s early. Time for my walk to Cedar Creek Park, a couple of blocks away. Start of a busy, busy and thrilling and dynamic day. It’s hot, slightly fresh still. Clear sky. I am not alone. This is a city walk, there are many others, up for exercise, themselves, their dogs. We’re friendly, we say hello. At the creek, a lamp, still lit, reflecting on the blue sky surface of water by the little waterfall. This is my lovely habitat. I will attend a poetry seminar, I will lead my play lab, meeting the writers who want to write plays, we will begin. Meals in the cafeteria with old and new friends. We are women writers. Every conversation stimulates, bubbling over. The whole day, the whole day and into this night, lit by a lovely lamp in a blue blue sky of gratitude.
