A wintry morning, and a wintry day, it did not warm up. But I woke and walked with a renewed energy and vigor; the feelings I wrote through and talked through and walked through yesterday settled. I felt lighter and the cold on my cheeks was refreshing. I made one or two final tweaks to my poem, drove to Concord and felt grateful to be in the lively workshop, the interesting poems, the focus on craft. And I was very gratified by the comments and appreciation for my poem; I could easily see I will drop the final couplet, quite clear to me after I read it.. One line only seemed to be a sticking point for a few, and I felt a strong resistance: I will not change this line. And driving home, passing Walden Pond, I was sure I saw some snow flurrying down, and noticed, yes, it must be flurries, it’s only 33 degrees! And by the time I reached home, I walked into the kitchen, and I heard the new line in my head. I didn’t want to change the line, but the line wanted to be changed. So there. I feel it’s done. In the late afternoon, I knew the dogs wanted a brisk walk, so we went to the river under the wintry sky and the moon was rising. There were ducks on the river by the trestle bridge, they quacked and lifted off into the dusky sky. We kicked through all the fallen leaves toward home.
