Buttonbush by the river

It was a completely cloud covered morning and my entire walk was drizzled on. And the minute I went indoors a hard rain fell. Still, I carried home a picture: button bush by the river, bright orange, remarkably cheerful standing next to the white flowered weed, reaching, reaching with its yellow center, almost as if it's nudging the button bush to play. Still, such rich green leaves.

So, this evening, as I reflect on my walk, I'm smiling at this picture, remembering the peace of the river gently rippling by me, the fresh air, the exuberant trot of the dogs sniffing and sniffing the scents on the trail and under the clouds, my little thrill about finding the healthy winterberries - so early - in the swamp, the ferns still fresh amidst the aging cattails of the river's wetlands, and the birdhouse in the meadow by the river's edge, making a sanctuary for wild birds who will want a home in winter weather.
