#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream
Thanksgiving on Martha's Vineyard with family. Nine of us, plus two dogs drive, early, to the ferry in cold, bright sunshine, an easy crossing. Then, first things first: Suzi and Charlie are completely startled by the unexpected walk on the beach at Lambert's Cove; disoriented by the crowds of dogs and their walkers, Suzi runs away down the beach looking for me among strangers while Charlie chases another dog's tennis ball in the surf. I'm freezing - it's not quite 40 degrees. Both dogs swim and don't notice how far the temperature has dropped since our last August swim in Vineyard Sound. Then: brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, my own three children and husband, a feast of family. I remember years of broken relationships at Thanksgiving, the heartbreak of conflicts that seem impossible to heal. Yet, mercifully, how they do.
