Grain and Scraps

First morning my snowshoes are wanted

I must rise early after the storm

the daughter who cares for her pigs is away

I must water and feed, water and feed

they are hungry and chilled, so am I

and the dogs bark and the dogs beg

for the grain and the scraps, the grain and scraps

while the pigs feed, the sun rises, a river stops

flowing from frozen and snow
