In the morning I walk on Vineyard Sound; in the afternoon at Lucy Vincent Beach. This is what it is to spend time on an Island, this being surrounded by water on all sides. On the Sound, it's listening to stillness, and being in quiet, contemplation. On the Atlantic, it's pounding surf, the suck of undertow and tides pulling; it's swimming under waves that can't be dodged, and being full body slammed by the inevitable ones that give you a thrashing. I love both. And, I'm a mother. So I have learned, particularly, to absorb the thrashing. (Some times deserved, and many times not. Still, it comes and must be absorbed.)
