Milkweed After Rain & More Rain

Milkweed After Rain & More Rain

Late Fragment

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

~ Raymond Carver, from “From A New Path to the Waterfall,” Atlantic Monthly Press, 1989.

This earth is taking a drenching. And the light, when there is light, doesn’t last. One thing I particularly enjoyed today: after the woods, was the beginning. The season of Thanksgiving, lived and loved, is finished. I pack the fat soft juicy pumpkins and the containers of purplish kale and the vegetable peelings and stale rolls and uneaten moldy bread into pails to feed the pigs and drive to Unity Farm with the bounty. Charlie and Suzi are in the car - mistake! The chickens and ducks, geese and hens are running the yard. Charlie goes mad with frustration inside the car as I carry the tins to the bins. Back home, the used up candles are tossed and new runners, for Christmas, replace the harvest. Now, the house sits for a short while in the in between time. I must hunt and gather the greens, buy the wreaths, freshen the candles. Today, there is enough light and plenty of quiet, and my ears are grateful to listen to peace; all of this listening is wintertime coming once more.
