Nature, Poem 51: The Blue Jay Emily Dickinson

Sun! What a boon! Waking with sunshine outside really was a lovely change and I felt so encouraged by this energy jolt. So much winter sky, I hadn’t realized how good the sun would feel. I decided not to swim and to just go outdoors, taking my time, an unscheduled day to full appreciate. There was lovely ice, and I found the most amazing thing: this arrangement of blue jay feathers on the ice in our wetlands. A bouquet of feathers, fallen from sky. I felt sorry for the blue jay, because there were many feathers around. But these arranged so artfully by chance. Another spontaneous cheerful gift. As I was walking Frank called from the winter tent where he was with my son dropping off some recent purchases, so I turned back and joined them to chat inside the tent for a bit. We didn’t light a fire because they were off to buy some more wood. But it was lovely to be there, relaxing for a bit. Later, I worked a bit, submitting some things. Then, a much needed massage. Met Frank and friends for dinner, casual and so fun for a winter night. Today was about regenerating, renewing, resting and relaxing. I’m grateful for family, friends, February and feathers.
