Stained Glass Cookies

One of my favorite Christmas Eve Days ever. Start to finish. Even though I am sick with laryngitis, sore throat, mild cold and tiredness. Day began in bed with a poem revision, working out a couple of things from last night’s workshop. Getting out of bed very slowly. Didn’t consider swimming, as I knew a walk would help me feel better and there was a lovely light snow. The river looked beautiful in its combination of freeze/thaw. The brook was bubbling and rushing. I felt less pressured. No more shopping for me. Frank available for final errands. A poem coming into its own. Then, Wave home, the best. And both my daughters. And we made dough for the stained glass cookies, a craft I did for years with them as kids and haven’t done since. Lots of memories, like the Christmas I had Perri & ten friends over for the last day of school before winter vacation, it was a half day, and she was in kindergarten, and I taught them all how to make the cookies, and as soon as all the girls had gone home after the party I realized that Perri had chicken pox! Oooops! Had to call all the girls’ parents and give them the news. Franci, a baby, came down with them less than a week later. The chicken pox Christmas. As soon as I told Wave he got to use a hammer in this craft, he was all in. You have to smash all the colored sour balls into “crushed glass.” It’s really fun. Christmas music on and Frank and Will joining in and our friends dropping by for a quick visit. Tonight, I wrapped a few gifts and left Frank to wrap the rest, which he cheerfully did. Now a movie with Wave while we wait for Santa and reindeer, the sound of hoofs on the roof. Unless we are, most likely, fast asleep.
