#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Excerpt from “Kindness,” by Naomi Shihab Nye

The war that began a year ago today is too big, much bigger, too huge to talk about tonight.

So, I ask: Was I kind today?

My daughter asked me if I would make banana pancakes for her son before he left for school. I made them. Carried them to him upstairs so he could eat them in his room.

Was I kind today?

My husband did not ask me to make him a sandwich. He was in his office, talking on the phone, as he does the whole day long, and I was making myself lunch, so I made him lunch too and brought it to his desk with a drink and a napkin, and he said thank you.

Was I kind today?

I met with my dear friend who is in Tampa who was struggling a bit with an essay on a deadline and I read it with her and gave her some comments and encouragement to shorten the task and boost her morale so she could finish and pack and get the heck out of town.

Was I kind today?

I drove to the store, instead of taking a nap, to get the flatbreads to make pizza for everyone for dinner and it was delicious. And everyone said thank you.

Did I receive kindness today?

Yes, as we sat at the table eating the pizza my dear friend knocked on the door with a dessert treat, just because she is kind and is always thinking of me. It was delicious. And I said thank you.

Was I kind today?

I cut my chocolate macaroons in halves and shared them with everyone and they said thank you.

Was I kind today?

I gave Charlie a piece of pizza that Perri dropped on the floor and he said thank you.

Did I receive kindness today?

Yes. The rain watered me and Charlie and all the late blooming flowers, and we say thank you.
