Milkweed

Early awake. Happy May Day! The Special One wants to be outdoors as soon as possible, so breakfast will wait. The grass is soaking wet from all night hard rain. River is high. Everything coming into bloom. We take a long walk. I show him the fiddleheads and anemones and violets and blackbirds and give him bouquets of bright maple wings which he clutches throughout the adventure, with plans to give them to his mother. We go to the railroad tracks, and my dear friend from Florida is with us, and all of us are joyful outdoors on this May day with the clouds lifting and a bit of blue sky showing and fabulous breeze. Later, we are back in the yard, after breakfast, and I looked yesterday for signs of my milkweed coming up in the garden, and no sign of it. But today, I find about eight small plants! The milkweed is spreading! I will have a lot of milkweed this summer! I tell him the monarchs will come, and the hummingbirds will come to the bee balm which is sprouting up beside the milkweed. In the afternoon, I must say goodbye to my dear friend as she departs on a plane for home. And how rich this long weekend has been. I am so ready for sleep.
