#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Lucy Vincent Beach

Frank up at 4:30. Me too. We have an early ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. As soon as the car is safely driven onto the freight ferry, I close my eyes and fall asleep, fast asleep for the whole 45 minute journey to the island. It’s so lovely to be here, surrounded by water, pounded by sun, under a brilliant sky. Islanders Write is a wonderful 3-day (free!) writing conference held on the Vineyard at Featherstone Center for the Arts, and that’s where I head first in the late morning to present a workshop. It’s held outdoors, under a tent, and it turns out it’s quite hot. The panel discussions are held inside. Occasionally there is a light breeze. But I am too hot. Still, it’s a rich and rewarding, intimate workshop and I’m glad I am here. Then I meet Frank and my daughter because it’s time to move into our rental in Chilmark, unload the car, and go to our favorite beach. Charlie is happy to be here; we’re all missing Suzi a bit, who loved the Vineyard all of her thirteen summers. Suddenly, unloading the car, I am beat. All my energy drains away. i take a quick dip, and then a nap. And, on the way home from Edgartown tonight where we had a lovely dinner, I can’t keep my eyes open. It’s time for some rest. So long, July. Thank you, July. Welcome, August!
