#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Excerpt from “Wellfleet: The House,” by Richard Wilbur

Wide awake and out the door by 6:30 a.m., alone, to the sun rising in the marsh and a long ramble in the tall grass and by the bay. I took my time, looking closely at the vacant shells of horseshoe crabs and oyster shells and the flat, silky lap of the salt water over the sand. I return in time for our day of meetings. We get through issues quickly, even tough ones. As we break for lunch, I get a delightful surprise. Our executive director, Michelle, asks if I want to go for a swim in Gull Pond which is not too far away. I immediately agree. In fact, I’m wearing my bathing suit. And off we go to the fresh water pond in the sunlight for a wonderful swim. Just what my body and mind and spirit needs to be immediately refreshed for the afternoon. Then, we work all afternoon, and at our dinner break, I offer to take two other board members for the walk to the marsh and back. The sun is setting over the bay, an orange ball sinking over the horizon, as we head back up the road on our return.
