Flowering Plants, US Open, Flushing Meadows

In the grand stand

In a massive, unnatural stadium environment, plants only grow in well planned, carefully placed, meticulously maintained planters. Because I want to watch the tennis tournament with my husband, this is where I must take my daily walk. I meander through the growing crowds of tennis fans, strolling along the pavement from one side of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center to the other, stretching my legs, looking for nourishing, natural beauty. I'm seeking spontaneity, improvisation - a plant or tree, a fungus or seed of opportunity that grows by accident, desire and risk, not by ordered plan. It's not possible for a plant to grow naturally here, because the only soil is found in the planters, put there on purpose, fertilized and sprinkled by machine. Tomorrow, I'll return to the woods and walk happily in the rain with the dogs. Today, I will enjoy the tennis.
