Ritual: Mornings are the Sound. Silver cloud cover on our early outing. We hike down Prospect Hill to Vineyard Sound, over the slick rocks of low tide, down along the beach to Great Rock Bight: a still morning, moist, heavy air, absence of breeze.

Afternoons, the open sea, and today, the brightest of suns, the bluest of skies, and soon enough, a rolling, forceful high tide.

All alone, for the first time in days and days, shimmering here on this breezy island afternoon, I am near. I take the path that leads to far: no hurry. I will find my way to far, all on my own sweet time.
