"Today I saw a dragon-fly"

~ Tennyson

I walk early, mist rising.

Looking for milkweed, find Suzi in the weeds.

Drought has killed the wildflowers in direct sun; this purple beauty stops me on the tree shaded trail.

We cross the meadow, goldening into autumn, our wide bright view.

In the river's marsh, over the shallow brook, the dogs dip, wild grapes ripen with the cattails.

I have enough. I have enough. The camera tucks into my shorts.

Then, out of the corner eye, in stillness on a browning leaf,

this clinging dragon meets me near
